What is the Return Bottle?

Breaking down the return bottle

Our Bottle Return scheme is unique in the U.K. We wanted to offer the traditional experience of popping a cork without producing unnecessary CO2 emissions and waste. Enter the Return Bottle.

Making the bottle part of the solution, not part of the problem, each Return Bottle can be returned, sterilised and reused at least 30 times, reducing the carbon footprint of each bottle by up to 95%.

Of course, our Zero Waste wines had to have a Zero Waste bottle. This is why we designed our bottle to be as friendly as possible to the concept of reuse, stripping it back to the essentials without removing the style you expect from a quality wine bottle.

NO FOIL

Foils were traditionally used to protect the cork from curious pests such as cork moths. Thankfully, modern winery standards are high enough to ensure a pest free environment, and foils are now purely decorative. To us, this wasn’t good enough reason to generate unnecessary waste: our labels are pretty enough on their own!

BAGASSE LABEL

Our labels are made from a natural byproduct of the sugar cane industry: bagasse. We put this biodegradable byproduct to good use in our beautifully designed labels. We use a water soluble glue to attach the labels, meaning we can easily remove and relabel the bottles when they come back to us for reuse.

DIAM CORK

We chose high quality DIAM corks to ensure our wines would remain in perfect condition, free from cork taint. DIAM uses processed cork and has invested considerably in their sustainability efforts, with each closure generating a negative carbon footprint. Cork is the ideal renewable material, harvested from the bark with no harm to the tree itself.

WHITE STRIPE

Our signature chalk stripe is a way to easily identify your return bottles, so you know what to look for in your favourite stockist and which bottles to pop back in your bag to return to them. Inspired by the chalk mark or ‘splash mark’ traditionally made on bottles of vintage Port, it pays homage to the quality of our wines and the tradition of bottling that they uphold.
